Amber

Days passed in a haze.

I couldn’t stop thinking about Dante. We spent almost every free moment together. Dante had moved the recording from the booth to my phone and I watched it, relishing his smile and how easy everything felt in that moment.

My whole body hurt from the very…athletic nights I spent with Dante.

“You’re still hooking up with him, aren’t you?” Rachel randomly asked as we wiped down some glassware.

I couldn’t stop the guilty expression.

“Yes, I am. But in my defense, I can't stop,” I responded honestly, without looking at her. I was trying to hide my shame.

“Amber, that's not good enough. I thought I warned you. It’s a bad idea.” She was clearly disappointed in me. I was disappointed in myself. But there was no stopping this. Our physical relationship was like a train ploughing headlong down a mountain. It was like nothing could stop us.

"I know it’s a bad idea, but I want to see where things go. For now, I’m okay with casual. I have to be ok with casual. My job is my priority right now., so after I thought about it, it actually makes sense.” I tried to justify my actions, and Rachel sighed with frustration.

“Are you sure this is what you want?” she reached for my hand. I looked at her with sincere eyes.

“It’s just fun. I think he has a point about not putting any labels on the relationship because I don’t have any expectations. And neither does he. It’s easy. We can't stay away from each other, so we have to come to an understanding, and I have to be ok with it.” Rachel didn’t seem impressed by what I was saying.

“If you say this is what you want, then who am I to stop you?” She let go of my hand. It wasn’t exactly warm acceptance in her voice, but she seemed to drop it.

“So, did you have fun on your little outing with him a few days ago?”

Gossip really did travel fast on this island. I’m sure a few people saw us getting cozy together. People already knew about our little fling and I was just done acting like there was nothing going on between us.

“It was so magical,” I responded with a wide smile. Despite herself, Rachel smiled excitedly, too. She realized that there wasn’t much she could do to try to save me. I was already hooked and the least she could do was go through it with me.

“What did you get up to?”

“A lot of things. We played with the video booth at the theme park.”

“Amber,” she exclaimed. “You made a sex tape?”

“What? No. Shh.” I mean, there were some PG-13 moments, maybe R moments, on the tape, but it wasn’t a sex tape.

“Amber! Haven’t you learned from, like, every celebrity? A sex tape is never a good idea.”

Her voice was kind of a whisper, but she was still being loud.

“I’m the only one with a copy, anyway. And it’s not a sex tape. But we decided that I get to keep the one copy that’s available.
